General Questions

Everything you need to know about how Sorted works, who we are, and how we make tax simple. From turnaround times to security and support — it’s all here.

Who will actually handle my tax return or CGT filing?

Your return is prepared and filed by a qualified UK accountant — no bots, no outsourcing. You’ll be assigned a dedicated tax expert who knows the ins and outs of HMRC requirements and will take care of everything for you.

How does the process work?

It’s simple. You fill out one form, and we handle everything from there — reviewing your info, preparing your return, and filing it with HMRC. You’ll get updates at every key stage, and if we need anything else, we’ll be in touch.

Are you an HMRC-authorised agent?

Yes — we’re fully authorised with HMRC, so we can file directly on your behalf. No need to share your login details or access your personal HMRC account.

Do I have to speak to someone, or is everything online?

Most clients love how effortless it is online — no meetings or back-and-forth. But if you’d prefer to speak with someone, you can call us on 0203 670 0770 (Mon–Fri, 9am–5pm), schedule a call, or request a callback by email or live chat.

How long does it take to get my return filed?

Most returns are completed within 3 working days. If it’s urgent, we’ll prioritise it — just let us know.

How do I know which service I need?

Our smart form helps guide you, and once it’s submitted, we’ll confirm you’re on the right service. If it turns out you need something different, we’ll let you know — no surprises.

Are your fees fixed, or are there hidden charges?

Our pricing is completely transparent: £149 or £199 for Tax Returns, £299 or £449 for CGT. No hidden fees, no hourly rates — just a fixed price for expert service.

Tax Return

Got questions about filing a Self Assessment tax return? Whether you’re self-employed, earning extra income, or just unsure where to start — we’ve got you covered.

Do I need to file a Self Assessment tax return?

You might if you’re self-employed, earn over £100k, receive rental or dividend income, have crypto gains, or work freelance. If you’re unsure, just ask — we’ll help you figure it out.

What’s the difference between the £149 and £199 tax return options?

The £149 “Simple Return” covers straightforward cases (e.g. employment + rental or freelance income). The £199 “Advanced Return” is for more complex situations — like RSUs, crypto, overseas income, multiple properties or director income. We’ll confirm which is right based on your form.

What documents do I need to provide?

We’ll prompt you, but usually it includes: P60/P45, rental income, dividend statements, self-employment figures, or any crypto summaries. If you’re missing something, we’ll let you know how to get it.

Can you handle foreign income, crypto, or RSUs?

Yes — all of those are covered under our £199 Advanced Tax Return. We’re experienced in handling complex cases and will make sure everything is done properly.

What if I’ve missed previous tax years?

No problem — we can help file past tax returns too. Just let us know which years you need and we’ll handle them one by one.

Will you help me claim all the reliefs and expenses I’m entitled to?

Definitely. We’ll check for any allowable deductions and reliefs to make sure you’re not paying more tax than you should.

Do I need to log into HMRC myself?

No need. As authorised agents, we can submit everything for you — you won’t need to access your HMRC account at all. We just need your UTR.

What if I make a mistake or something changes after filing?

No worries — one amendment is included at no extra cost within 12 months of filing. Just let us know what’s changed and we’ll take care of it.

Do I need to register with HMRC before filing?

If you’re not yet registered for Self Assessment, we can guide you through that step or even do it on your behalf — just let us know.

CGT

Selling a UK property? Learn what the 60-day Capital Gains Tax rule means, who needs to file, and how Sorted makes the whole process fast, accurate, and fully hands-off.

Do I need to file a 60-day CGT return?

You do if you’ve sold a UK residential property where some or all of the gain is taxable — including second homes, buy-to-lets, or a main home that wasn’t fully covered by Private Residence Relief.

What’s the 60-day CGT rule?

If you made a taxable gain on a UK residential property, you must report and pay Capital Gains Tax within 60 days of the sale completing — or face late filing penalties.

Can you file my CGT return without my HMRC login?

Yes — completely. As HMRC-authorised agents, we can file directly on your behalf. You don't need to share your HMRC login details with us.

What’s the difference between Solo and Joint CGT filing?

Solo (£299) is for one property owner. Joint (£449) is for two owners selling the same property (e.g. married couples or joint investors). Both include full review, relief checks, and filing.

Can you help with Private Residence Relief or Lettings Relief?

Yes — our accountants will calculate and apply all relevant reliefs to reduce your tax bill as much as possible.

What documents do I need to send?

We’ll guide you, but usually that’s: your completion statement, purchase documents, any refurbishment costs, and a breakdown of how the property was used over time.

I live overseas — do I still need to file?

Yes. Even if no tax is due, non-residents are required to report UK residential property sales to HMRC within 60 days.

It’s been more than 60 days — can I still file?

Yes, we can still help. There may be penalties, but we’ll file as soon as possible and help you explain any delays to HMRC to minimise the impact.

Does this also cover my Self Assessment return?

Not automatically — CGT filing is separate from the annual Self Assessment tax return. But if you need both, let us know and we’ll bundle the services for you.

I sold my main home — do I still need to file?

Maybe. If it was your only or main residence for the entire ownership period, you may not need to file. But if you rented it out at any point or used it as a second home, a CGT return could still be required. We’ll help you check.
